Japanese Spa Resort Hawaiians Rebuilds with QSC

Fukushima, Japan, April 2012 - Spa Resort Hawaiians, a family water resort in Fukishima prefecture, Japan, had not long completed a complete refurbishment, including the commissioning of a QSC Installation Line Array (ILA) Loudspeaker System, when the terrible earthquake and tsunami of March 2011 wreaked havoc in the area. The resort had to close, but reconstruction work began almost immediately, and the ILA is now back in full service on the recently completed entertainment stage.

Japanese QSC distributor Onkyo Tokki Ltd (OTK) was responsible for the original ILA installation as well as the reconstruction work. The entertainment area at the spa, which hosts evening Hula dance and Polynesian live music events for the spa's customers, is located behind an indoor lido pool area, and is surrounded on three sides by two-tiered audience seating with a maximum capacity of 1000 people.

Prior to the refurbishment, the resort's management was unsatisfied with the sound of the original PA. Due to the expansion of the entertainment area over the years, the existing 14-year-old system no longer provided an even dispersal of sound across the seating area. The managers knew it was time for a system capable of achieving consistent coverage both laterally and vertically.

OTK recommended the QSC ILA as both the most efficient and cost-effective solution for the resort. As the ILA provides an impressive 140-degree horizontal range of coverage, no outfills or centre clusters were needed, further minimising cost and complexity. OTK decided to install 12 WL2082-i loudspeakers and two pairs of WL118-sw subwoofers. A dedicated SC28 system controller was chosen to optimise the performance of the system, in which the speakers were driven 4-way (3-way plus subs) by a combination of QSC PowerLight(tm) PL325 and PL340 amplifiers.

Installed in two arrays mounted five metres from the ground, one on either side of the stage and each consisting of six WL2082-i elements and a pair of WL118-sw subs, the stage sound system succeeded in reproducing on-stage sound with vastly improved clarity and presence, delivering it evenly to every seat in the house - even the rear seats on the top tier, which are around 30 metres away from the twin QSC arrays.

Following the earthquake, reconstruction at Spa Resort Hawaiians took just under a year. According to OTK, the goal of the reconstruction work was to restore the systems at the resort to the state they were in the day before the disaster, and this was achieved by the time the resort reopened on February 8, 2012. To the delight of OTK's engineers, when the structural works on the resort following the earthquake were complete, the QSC ILA and its constituent elements were found to be in full working order, requiring no repairs.

Brooklyn, NY - April 26, 2012 -- BAMcafe, a restaurant and live performance venue located within the main Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) building recently installed a QSC Audio KLA Active Line Array Loudspeaker System. BAMcafe presents as many as 75 music, comedy and spoken word events annually in its free BAMcafe Live series and is open for dinner on nights when there is a performance at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House.

See Factor Industry, Inc., a touring and installed lighting and sound equipment provider was tasked with providing a system which sounds great at a reasonable price point.

"BAM came to me asking for a recommendation, as I had done the installation in the Opera House there," says Greg Wnuk, Audio Department Manager/Special Events at See Factor. "BAMcafe needed a powerful sound solution which was also cost-effective, and KLA fit their price point while sounding great."

Such was Wnuk's confidence in the QSC brand that he recommended the new KLA system sight (and sound) unseen. He reveals. "I hadn't heard the KLAs yet, but I was pretty confident they were going to sound good because the QSC stuff sounds good. This client was aware that I hadn't heard the KLA yet -- but they trusted me to trust QSC. The first time I got to hear them was we did the KLA demo at BAM, and we were all very impressed."

Originally conceived as BAM's ballroom and completed in 1908, the room was renovated and renamed the Lepercq Space in honor of the chairman of the board in 1973. BAMcafe opened in the BAM Lepercq Space in 1997 and launched its BAMcafe Live weekend programming two years later. Depending on the room setup the venue holds between 160 (dinner and dancing) and 325 (standing) people. The KLA12's are flown above the performance area located at one end of the room, which measures approximately 117 feet by 42 feet, and offer coverage all the way to the bar area, which is 75 feet down the room.

"The KLA system really has taken the venue to the next level of sound," says Josh Escajeda, BAM Associate Production Manager. "We do so many different types of events, from weekly live bands, to

opening night receptions, speaking agendas, film screenings to book readings -- we really needed something that could be as versatile as the space."

"We were constantly pushing our old system to its limits," added Escajeda. "Now with the KLA system, we have plenty of headroom. Just testing it, we surprised people in the offices above the space, because they could hear the sound in their office. It was awesome. And the customer service from QSC has also been great."

BAM, which is currently celebrating its 150th anniversary, is America's oldest performing arts center, and has hosted wide variety of celebrities, from performers to presidents, during its years of service.

About See Factor Industry, Inc.
See Factor Industry is a New York City based full service production company. Established over 40 years ago, they provide audio, lighting, staging, rigging and video services for the concert, industrial and film and TV business. From national touring artists to corporate events, sales and installations as well as full event production, they have the recourses to make any size project happen.
www.seefactor.com

QSC Debuts the DXP Digital Expansion Processor at CinemaCon

Costa Mesa, CA - QSC Audio Products LLC announces that the DXP Digital Expansion Processor will be introduced for the first time at the company's booth at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, April 28-30, 2012.
The DXP works with the existing DCP 200 and 300 cinema processors to create an exceptionally powerful networked audio solution for cinema. The DXP is a 1U rack mount DSP processor that connects to the DCP's via CobraNet(tm). CobraNet routes digital audio and control information over Ethernet to allow the DXP to be mounted near the loudspeakers if desired.

The QSC DCA Series amplifiers connect to the DXP via a DataPort interface. The DataPort connection supplies audio to the amplifier and controls the AC power while monitoring key amplifier conditions such as clipping and heat sink temperature. The audio output of the amplifier is returned to the DCP via the CobraNet connection so that it can be listened to via the DCP's built in monitor speaker.

When mounted behind the screen with the amplifiers, The DXP eliminates the need for long and expensive speaker cables and conduit. Inexpensive Ethernet cable and a local AC power source can greatly reduce the cost of system wiring. The DXP is also useful in "boothless" cinema concepts as the entire sound system need not be located in a single, large rack.

The DXP provides 12 DataPort connections and all of the necessary DSP for loudspeaker crossovers. For very large systems, up to two DXP's may be connected to each DCP. The DCP/DXP combination is ideal for multi-channel audio systems with up to 16 inputs.

The QSC Cinema Solutions portfolio, featuring the new DXP Digital Expansion Processor, can be seen at CinemaCon Booth 613F.
CobraNet is a trademark of Cirrus Logic, Inc

Click here to learn more about DXP

Q-Sys™ Aids Doctors on Call at Italy’s Ospedale Martini

Turin, Italy, March 2012 - A new audio system under control of the Q-Sys™ Integrated System Platform has been installed at the Ospedale Martini hospital here as part of an upgrade to its communications network, courtesy of the exclusive QSC distributor in the region, AudioLink. Based around a Core 1000 processor, the Q-Sys platform controls the call and paging systems, routing audio to twin CX204V and CX302V amplifiers, as well as AcousticDesign™ surface-mount and in-ceiling loudspeakers strategically placed around the hospital.

Like any other busy city-center hospital, the Ospedale Martini relies on its public address system to page urgently needed staff and relay important information to patients. But with multiple departments spread throughout the building, the hospital's requirements amount to much more than a single public address channel. They need the means to direct messages from anywhere, to anywhere, targeting specified parts of the building only. Just as important, they need a system that can easily be used by any member of staff.

When the hospital decided to upgrade the communications network in three departments - the general admissions and outpatients wing, the medical specialties wing and the pediatric first aid unit - the contract, assigned through a public bid, went to AudioLink. The brief, specified by the hospital's chief of telecommunications, Mr Silvano Nieddu, called for a complex voice call system comprising a total of 43 individual call stations, each one allowing the user to route their message to any specified zone of the hospital at the push of a button. AudioLink immediately knew that Q-Sys would provide the ideal solution.

The greatest strengths of the Q-Sys platform are its sheer flexibility and ease of use. Using the processing power of a single Q-Sys Core 1000 unit, AudioLink were able to design a call system tailored exactly to the hospital's needs, using a combination of PS-1600 Networked Page Stations and their own custom-made hardware. Page station microphones input audio into the Q-Sys audio chain, while the buttons on the page stations select the desired call zone. These logic functions are easily programmed via Q-Sys Designer software.

With far more capability than simple audio routing, the system can be designed with a host of other features, like a visual indicator when a particular call zone is busy, call queuing, priority for emergency calls to interrupt non-emergency calls, as well as the scheduled transmission of pre-recorded messages and much more.

To broadcast these messages in eight specified zones across the three departments, AudioLink installed a total of 38 wall-mounted AD-S52T compact loudspeakers and a further six AD-CI52T in-ceiling speakers, guaranteeing clear, intelligible speech reproduction while taking up minimal space.

Q-Sys plays a further role in helping the Ospedale Martini treat its patients. Using the Q-Sys Designer software, AudioLink were able to seamlessly integrate the Ospedale Martini's automated patient queuing system with the public address network. Upon arrival at general admissions, each patient receives a numbered ticket. When a new number is called, the system automatically triggers the relevant pre-recorded message to alert the patient.

Other custom designed features built into the system at the request of the Ospedale Martini's telecommunications chief include a bespoke computer interface to control audio levels throughout the hospital, remote control of DVD players delivering information to patients via a LAN to IR interface, and the ability to remotely switch off all the information display screens to save energy, either manually or at scheduled times.

Commenting on the completed installation, Stefano Cantadori of AudioLink remarked: “The client specifications for this project were very logical and precise. They clearly identified the problem they wanted to solve, and they knew what they needed to resolve it, in outline terms. For us, it was then a matter of finding the most effective and simple solution, while bearing in mind flexibility and scalability over time. The system also had to be easy to use, accessible and robust.

“Q-Sys with CX amplifiers fits all these requirements. With the expert aid of our specialist Giammario Piumatti, the system was designed and computer-modeled, then checked with Mr Nieddu and his team. This meant there were no surprises of any kind when the actual hardware and software was eventually installed.”

Q-Sys™ Takes Control at State-of-the-Art Italian Multimedia Museum

Bard, Italy, March 2012 - The historic Forte di Bard recently opened its high-tech multimedia museum here, spanning more than 20 rooms, and featuring state-of-the art audio visual presentations, touch screens and interactive experiences for the visitor, all controlled by the recently installed Q-Sys(tm) Integrated System Platform.

Perched on a rocky promontory high above this small northern Italian town, Forte di Bard (Fort Bard) has been a site of strategic significance since the pre-Roman era. Today its importance is cultural rather than military. Completely restored in 2006, the stunning courtyards of this fortress complex now play host to theatre and ballet performances, summer pop concerts and literary events, while its imposing walls house major touring exhibitions of art and photography, as well as permanent collections like the Museo delli Alpi (Museum of the Alps).

The latest step in the on-going expansion of the Fort is the new museum dedicated to the history of the site and the evolution of its fortifications. This state-of-the-art interactive multimedia exhibition features synchronized audio-visual presentations delivered via conventional video screens, interactive touch-screens and video projection. This extremely sophisticated installation called for a multimedia control system that could coordinate all the audio and video as well as the lighting and more, across the various rooms and display systems.

IBR Sistemi of Genoa handled the design and installation of the new museum, and with the help of AudioLink, QSC's exclusive distributor in Italy, they chose Q-Sys as the perfect solution to control the advanced technological needs of the Forte di Bard.

Every element of the Forte di Bard exhibition is controlled by Q-Sys. At the center of the network, a Q-Sys Core 3000 unit handles 68 channels of audio and controls a total of 125 peripheral devices, ranging from the touch screens and their associated computers to video players, video screens and projectors. Additional Q-Sys I/O Frames equipped with DataPort I/O cards allow centralized control of the CX Series amplifiers located all around the exhibition. Meanwhile, the I/O Frames' GPIO ports allow the Q-Sys Core to directly control the lighting system and the motorized screens used for larger video projections. And by connecting a second Q-Sys 3000 Core to the network, the installers were able to ensure complete system redundancy and offer the guarantee of no disruption.

Making any alterations to the existing historic structure was obviously out of the question. AcousticDesign(tm) Series AD-S32T and AD-S52 loudspeakers proved ideal for the scenario. Delivering high-quality sound in a robust, compact package, they were easily mounted on lightweight frames suspended from the ceiling. Where further sound reinforcement was required, AD-S28Tw subwoofers were discreetly deployed. The Q-Sys Designer software design environment made assembling this sophisticated network a stress-free experience. The completely modular nature of the Q-Sys control system and I/O peripherals made it easy to accommodate the necessary hardware within the space available. And with the audio delivery hardware in place, the system was easily fine-tuned in situ via a wireless remote control.

Claudio Donato of IBR Sistemi said: "We are very happy to have used QSC technology on this project. It all comes together as a true system. In particular, we've found Q-Sys to be an extremely powerful and flexible platform - easy to integrate into our interactive system and very innovative."

Stefano Cantadori, head of AudioLink, adds: "Q-Sys is incredibly flexible. With the two QSC Cores in place, we can now put I/O in every other zone of the Forte di Bard and build many independent, fully redundant systems. We can connect all those systems together, provide VoIP and audio playback, and control just about any gizmo that can be connected via LAN. It is the future, now. Our customers are only just beginning to realize the full potential of Q-Sys, its ease of expandability and the vast range of applications the system can handle."

Gulf Breeze Church Rocks Its Contemporary Service with QSC Line Array

Gulf Breeze, FL - February 27, 2012 - Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, situated near Pensacola, Florida has installed a QSC Audio WL2082-i Installation Line Array System with PLX Series amplification and an SC28 DSP processor in the main sanctuary at its Fairpoint campus. The new system is part of a renovation of the church's aging audio-visual systems.

Michael Evans, Vice President of Satsuma, Alabama-based ALPHA Sound & Lighting, the design-build company that installed the system, says, "In the contemporary service they use electronic drums, electronic keyboards, guitars, bass guitar and praise singers. Bo Parker, the church's director of worship, felt the current sound in the house lacked definition."

Walthall & Associates, a design-consulting firm located in Pensacola, FL that specializes in acoustics, audio, video and digital technologies, was called in by Evans to redesign the system. Founder Chuck Walthall was already familiar with the church, having installed its original sound system over 15 years ago when he was managing a contracting company.

As part of the redesign, Walthall recommended the removal of the old main system, which over time had undergone modifications that adversely affected its performance. "A single point source was definitely the choice for this room, which is rectangular-shaped with a balcony," says Walthall. "Mike and I were impressed with the performance of the QSC ILA system on another project and felt that this design called for it as well. We went with nine WL2082-i elements, four on top for the balcony and five below for the main sanctuary. Now the coverage is great, with maybe 2 dB of variation."

"We're very proud of the way it looks; Kenny & Kris from ALPHA did a great job flying the cluster, using an FB2082-i frame and flying hardware." says Evans. He also notes, "We had to stay within a budget. The church had quite a few of the older QSC MX Series amplifiers which were still working, so we left them in place for the monitors. But we replaced the main speaker amps with three PLX2502s and two PLX3102s, and installed an SC28 processor. They were also using some boxes for front fills, which we left in place."
"We performed a dual FFT tuning, and the ILA system responded with accuracy," adds Walthall. "The system is compact, it sounds great, the coverage is great and coupled with the controller it does what QSC says it'll do. I like it when things just work!"

The Sunday after the install, the church used the system for the first time, and Walthall adds, "The music minister shot me an email to say it was the best sounding service ever in his tenure there. They're just loving it."

Haifa, Israel, February 2012 - QSC distributor, Kilim Electronics, has permanently installed a PA system based on QSC KLA Series Active Line Arrays and both K and KW Series Active Loudspeakers at one of Israel's hottest nightclubs, The Beat. Two KLA arrays, each with three KLA12 loudspeaker elements, are suspended on either side of the nightclub's main stage. Eight KW181 subwoofers provide the extended low end needed to keep the crowds moving, while six K12 active loudspeakers act as the on-stage monitors for The Beat's performing musicians. Two additional K12s around the club act as out-fills for the PA.

One of Israel's best-known music venues, The Beat regularly hosts live music from significant local artists and performers, as well as big-name artists on the international touring circuit. Every Tuesday night the club holds an 'open mic' night, when any artists may take the stage and perform their art, bringing only their instruments with them. For this reason, the quality of the venue's PA, through which all of these artists have to perform, is of particular importance.

According to Doron and Erez, owners of The Beat nightclub, since the installation was carried out many artists performing in the club have noticed the improvement. "A lot of artists play at The Beat on tour, and most of the live sound engineers who've worked here since the summer have commented on the improved sound quality and power offered by the new QSC system," they explain. "Most have liked the fact that the system produces audio at a high volume but does not hurt their ears like other nightclub PA systems.

"The sound is clear without distortion, the subs are strong but not too overpowering, and the number of people who arrive at the club is increasing from week to week," say the owners.

Gadi Kilim, head of Kilim Electronics, adds, "The use of KLA, KW and K Series loudspeakers is very convenient and efficient. Since there are no amplifiers which physically take a lot of space, and the current draw of the K Family amplifier module is so low… the QSC system is the smart solution for permanent installations, especially when the audience is located close to the stage."

QSC Scores a Slam Dunk with Junior Casale

Casale Monferrato, Italy, January, 2012 - QSC Audio Products' distributor in Italy, AudioLink, has delivered a brand new audio system for the Palazzetto dello Sport Paolo Ferraris in Casale Monferrato, based upon the Q-Sys(tm) integrated system platform, KLA Series active line arrays, and K Series active loudspeakers. Informally known as the PalaFerraris, the multi-purpose venue in northwestern Italy caters to a range of indoor sports, concerts and other events. More importantly, it is home to newly-promoted Serie A basketball team A.S. Junior Casale.

The past year has been a memorable one for the team. In 2011 Junior Casale were crowned outright champions of LegaDue and, in a dramatic playoff final, clinched promotion to the top division of Italian basketball. As a top-level team needs a top-level arena, Casale Monferrato city council commissioned a major renovation of the PalaFerraris, increasing the seating capacity to 3,510 and installing a brand-new, state-of-the-art sound system.

When it came to finding an audio control system with the power and flexibility to meet the diverse needs of the venue, the Q-Sys platform was the obvious choice. Designed with the technical support of experienced independent audio-visual consultant Angelo Rovero, the entire PalaFerraris audio system is built around a single Q-Sys Core 1000 unit. With all processing, monitoring and routing centrally controlled by Q-Sys, the system can seamlessly handle music, pre-recorded messages, live announcements and in-game sound effects, maintaining the highest audio quality throughout.

Taking ease of use to next level, the entire system is able to be controlled from an iPad running the Q-Sys Controller App and Q-Sys Designer software, which allows the user to assemble custom user control interfaces (UCIs), placing practically any element of the system at his or her fingertips. At PalaFerraris, an operator can now monitor and adjust levels, switch source selection and trigger music and jingles instantly using the iPad's touch screen.

"Q-Sys was the ideal solution for the PalaFerraris. The totally flexible architecture of the Q-Sys Core and the intuitive nature of the Q-Sys Designer software mean that configuring the entire system to fit the needs of the venue is exceptionally quick and easy," says Stefano Cantadori, head of AudioLink, "Our on-site specialist Giammario Piumatti, who is there to assist the client with programming the system, loves it because any last-minute ideas and requests can so easily be integrated, just as the system can easily be adapted in the future to cope with the evolving needs of the venue."

To fully realise this potential, AudioLink suggested that PalaFerraris take a look at one of the newest additions to the House of K - the KLA Series active line array. Working together with installation contractors Testa Marco & C., a total of four KLA line arrays, each composed of three KLA12 active, two-way loudspeaker elements, were mounted above the main stands, delivering incredible power and projection without restricting the view of any of the spectators. An additional complement of K Series K10 and K8 active loudspeakers were deployed at ground level to cover the brand-new court-side stands and provide discreet sound reinforcement around the court itself.

On completion of the project, both the design team and the PalaFerraris' in-house technicians said they were very satisfied with the results obtained from the Q-Sys platform, KLA Series line arrays and K Series loudspeakers.

Brentwood, NY, (January 10, 2012) - Suffolk County Community College, located on Long Island, NY, has installed a completely new QSC sound system in its 60,000-square-foot field house that includes WideLine(tm) line array loudspeakers, PowerLight(tm) Series amplifiers and SC28 processors. The college, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, sought to improve quality from rented sound systems that were unable to overcome the less than ideal acoustics at this sports and exhibition complex here.

"I've been a QSC fan forever," says system designer/installer Dominick Campana, General Manager of Pro Sound Alliance, a division of Live Sound, Inc., based in Troy, NY. "We had a strict deadline to get things completed so I had to go with a system that I felt very comfortable with, and I have been working with QSC for many years. For the last 15 years they've been one of very few companies that have always been extremely consistent in both the quality of their products as well as delivering exactly what they promise."

Tasked with designing a sound system that could be easily configured for the variety of events typically held at the multi-use facility, Campana and his crew installed a total of 16 WideLine-10 (WL2102-w-WH) wide dispersion line array speakers, 14 WideLine-8 (WL3082-WH) ultra compact line array modules and two WL212-sw-WH ultra compact subwoofers. Two PL325, six PL340 and five PL380 amplifiers power the system, all optimized by three SC28 processors. The speakers were flown using two AF-2102-LA-WH large array and three AF3082-S-WH small array frames and an EB3082-WH extension bar.

The venue can seat more than 4,000 people for graduation ceremonies and an eight-per-side WideLine-10 system handles the full house. A single, six-module WideLine-8 array provides coverage to the venue's east side for trade shows while special events, such as conferences and seminars, are handled by just the top four boxes of an eight-module WideLine-8 on the west side. For center court basketball games, the full eight-module WideLine-8 array, with WL212 subs flown behind the mains, delivers powerhouse sound. All the speakers and flying hardware are finished in white to match the aesthetics of the athletic center.

"As far as the system goes, I'm in heaven!" states Neftali Collazo, director, special events and programs, SUNY Suffolk, who worked with the school's audio expert, Ray Reardon, technical director, Department of Theater Arts, to bring the new system to the field house. "Everything was so perfect. There were no hiccups, no problems at all. Dominick and his crew were phenomenal; I would recommend them to anybody."

The space was a challenge, acknowledges Campana, since it features reflective, parallel walls, a hardwood floor and a ceiling height of over 40 feet, with a sloping steel roof that also has a shallow curve. But, he says, "The EASE modeling software for the QSC WideLines was extremely accurate and made the installation much easier and more effective than it would have been if starting from scratch. The rigging frame pick point information was also very useful and time saving. It made it really easy to model pick points on the frames and position everything vertically in the venue in the most effective way, and keep it off the walls."

"As both the designer and the installer," adds Campana, "I am extremely pleased with the outcome that QSC has helped us achieve. And more importantly, the customer is very pleased and has received compliments from everyone involved."

The QSC system was purchased from Scott Price at ProAudio.com in Ft. Worth, TX, and installed by the company's design/build division, Church Audio Video.

In the main sanctuary at Mundo de Fe, which seats approximately 1,500 people, the KLA system is flown in two hangs, each comprising four KLA12 12-inch, two-way, loudspeakers. Six KLA181 18-inch subwoofers are ground-stacked, three per side. There are also three K12 12-inch, two-way active loudspeakers installed in a distributed ring providing delay coverage.

The QSC speaker system offers plenty of headroom to the church, which puts the emphasis on music in its services. "They are a modern, rock 'n' roll, Hispanic church, and it's very high energy," comments Jeff McLeod, Managing Director for Church Audio Video.

"As a church, we are so happy with the QSC K Series Line Array," states Tim Holland, Pastor of LifeChurch/Mundo de Fe. "In my mind, there is no better quality available on the market at this price point. The sound is powerful yet clear. Our church is very pleased with this QSC product. It rocks!"

As McLeod relates, ProAudio.com's Price contacted Church Audio Video shortly after making the sale to have the integration division install the QSC system. "Flying the KLA12 speakers took next to no time, he says: "It was real easy.
Award-Winning Folk Ensemble Bellowhead Relies on QSC K Series for U.K. Tour

Costa Mesa, California, December 2011 - Bellowhead, a U.K.-based folk ensemble and darlings of the European festival circuit, relied on QSC K Series active loudspeakers - ten K10s and two K12s - as on-stage monitors throughout their recently completed tour of England, in support of last year's 'Hedonism' album. The much-fêted band, four times named Best Live Act at BBC Radio 2's annual Folk Awards, are expert live performers and needed powerful and reliable on-stage monitoring system for their recent tour.

The band's FOH engineer for the tour was Alistair McGibbon, known to many through his experience working with bands ranging from folksters Nizlopi to Budgie and Black Sabbath. McGibbon was Bellowhead's FOH engineer on 24 festival dates earlier in the year, but this was the first time he had been on tour with them, playing nightly over three consecutive weeks. While the band was reliant on each venue's FOH system, McGibbon was keen that they have a consistent stage monitoring system throughout the tour.

Familiar with a variety of other QSC products, McGibbon had not seen the company's K Series active loudspeakers until earlier in the year. "I was doing the audio at a conference, which finished with a live band. They brought in a set of K8s and I just thought, 'How are we going to get a decent sound with these tiny things?' And then I was amazed at what came out of them, given their size. I liked the design, as well as, the built-in handles and the low weight. So when I needed something for Bellowhead, K Series seemed the obvious choice!"

"There was a huge variety of venues on this tour, acoustically speaking, from small clubs to big, old, former music halls like the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London," says McGibbon. "And with eleven members in the band, sound-checking with Bellowhead is a fairly complicated and time-consuming business. I knew that it would be impossible to get them a decent on-stage sound each night in the time available unless we had some elements on stage that stayed the same throughout the tour. I needed something light, portable and powerful, and on a reasonable budget. The K Series fit the bill."

Nine K10s were supplied by Shure Distribution UK for band members, with a tenth at the house desk. Bellowhead's brass bassist, Ed Neuhauser, who plays the mighty Sousaphone and the tuba-like Helicon, was provided a K12, as was drummer/percussionist Pete Flood.

Post-tour, McGibbon believes that he has found the compact portable system the band have been looking for to handle their future tours. "I think the K Series is the most portable monitoring system I've ever seen," he explains. "Every night, we just took them down and put them straight in the van, ready to go to the next date - simple. And they really pack a punch."
"The tour has gone really well, with five-star reviews,' adds McGibbon, "so I hope we'll be using the K Series loudspeakers again on next year's European tour!"

5 Minutes With Joe Pham

By Dan Ferrisi
QSC is a company whose name should be familiar to just about anybody who works in any segment of the audio industry, from the commercial fixed-install portion, with which this writer was closely aligned during a six-and-a-half-year tenure with Sound & Communications, sister publication to The Music & Sound Retailer, to the MI portion, of which all of us are part today. Joe Pham, President/CEO, granted The Retailer a detailed, wideranging interview during which he discussed his background and career trajectory, QSC's evolving product portfolio, the company's secrets to business success and the state of the market during this turbulent economic time. There is a whole lot to cover, and plenty to learn. Read on….

-The Retailer: To start, can you tell me a bit about your personal background, particularly as it relates to a love of audio or music? Have you always been interested in audio?
Joe Pham: The short answer is yes. I love audio. I taught myself guitar at age 13. I played in a high school band and, during rehearsals, the drummer and I would always switch instruments. Needless to say, I am a bad guitar player and an even worse drummer. Nevertheless, I just love being around music and audio.

-The Retailer: Can you tell me about your career, in terms of where you began and where you are now?
Joe Pham: I have a technical background, earning my PhD in Electrical Engineering at UCLA. I taught Electrical Engineering at UCLA and then joined McKinsey & Company, a global consulting firm. After four years at McKinsey, I realized I needed to pursue my passion for audio, so I left McKinsey and joined QSC. I joined QSC in 2004 as our SVP, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer. In 2007, I became our Chief Operating Officer. In 2010, I became our President and CEO.

-The Retailer: What are your day-to-day responsibilities and duties within QSC? What is the biggest way in which you contribute to the continuing success of the company?
Joe Pham: I view my role as simply working with the team here to build a great organization. An organization that is strategically sound, financially solid and operationally efficient. This is the "Business Smarts" side of what we do. It is also extremely important to me personally that we are "Organizationally Healthy." By this, I mean QSC is a place where people are growing, working together, and are genuinely engaged and excited to bring forth their best. If each day we can make small progress toward these goals, then I am going home with a smile.

-The Retailer: Let's talk about QSC in broad strokes. I'd like to get an overview of the company, talking about its founding, development and growth to become the force it is today.
Joe Pham: QSC was founded in 1968 by Pat Quilter as a guitar amplifier company. Pat, along with Barry Andrews and John Andrews, built the business and the foundation of QSC. By the late 1990s, QSC had established itself as a leading power amplifier company in the industry. In the last 10-plus years, we've worked hard to transform ourselves into a full systems provider. Currently, our business segments include power amplifiers, loudspeakers, networked audio control, transport and DSP. Soon, we will be entering the mixer market.

-The Retailer: Why did the company, a number of years ago, delve into the loudspeaker market? Were the products then available insufficient for the market's needs? Was it just an opportunity that had to be capitalized on?
Joe Pham: QSC has always been an organization of growth and change. The loudspeaker segment at that time was the next natural stage of growth for QSC. Barry, John and Pat had studied the segment and believed there was an attractive opportunity. Additionally, powered loudspeakers were becoming more prevalent in the market, which is a threat to an amplifier company if you're not able to respond to that market trend. Thus, our entry into the segment was partly due to market opportunity and a powered loudspeaker trend, but more so from a continuing philosophy of growth for the organization.

-The Retailer: When you look at QSC as it currently exists, of what would you say you're the proudest? What makes your company stand apart not only from competitors in the market, but also from all manufacturers?
Joe Pham: You know, if you're looking for the one thing, I will always point to our people. I spoke earlier about "Organizational Health." We simply have great people. Phenomenal talent. More importantly, we genuinely care for one another and really- and I mean really-work together as a team. I don't want to say that we're one big, happy family, because, one, it's not true and, two, that's just goofy. But there is a level of care here that does remind you of family. And that is something extremely special, not only in our industry but in the workplace in general, too.

-The Retailer: Obviously, QSC is involved with a number of market segments. I formerly covered your fixed-install side.
Can you tell me how QSC intersects with the MI space and why it's important for music store owners to know about QSC products?
Joe Pham: The MI/entertainer space is one of our key segments. In each segment that we compete in, we strive to deliver products that meet customer needs and deliver service and support that exceed expectations. We offer a compelling line of products for the musician/DJ/entertainer customer base and, in the U.S., there is considerable and trusted data that shows QSC as the leading manufacturer of sound-reinforcement products in terms of dollars sold. Today, these include RMX and GX amplifiers, as well as K Series and KW Series loudspeakers. We also recognize that a large and growing percentage of our retail dealers also provide some measure of contractor and installed- sound support, be it selling installation-type products to contractors or acting in a design and install capacity themselves. Often, entities like houses of worship or other organizations have need of some kind of pro audio gear and, after not finding what they need at RadioShack , are inclined to check out their local music store where they may encounter QSC products specific to their needs.

-The Retailer: In the audio and music segments, there are often a great number of creative individuals who work within manufacturers. Would you say the QSC team is a very creative one?
Joe Pham: Very much so. QSC is a fun environment where people are encouraged to shine and "unleash" their creativity. Creativity manifests itself differently across the organization. For example, in engineering, it's innovation while, in marketing, it's creativity in the more traditional definition. Regardless, whether you call it creativity, innovation or simply having fun, it is a big part of our identity.

-The Retailer: So, are there a lot of musicians…a lot of people who, in their own personal time, might be involved in bands, or formerly were, or were roadies? Does QSC have people who are very much plugged into the music segment?
Joe Pham: Yes, absolutely! Whenever we have company parties, there are usually four or five bands that are formed within the organization. I have to tell you: There are so many great musicians in the company. We recently had a company Celebration this summer. Pat Quilter was on stage playing with several employees and Gerry Tschetter band headlined the evening. Both bands were great. Gerry, who is our VP of Marketing, is always sending e-mails to the entire company "plugging" his band. Now I know why: They are really, really good!

-The Retailer: Shine a light on some of your latest technological and product developments. Going forward, what are you going to be pushing most aggressively? What do you have in the pipeline that you might want to preview for us? I'd also like to know why you feel these products are important additions to the market.
Joe Pham: We've recently introduced the KLA Series line array, which is the latest addition to our "House of K" family of products. Like the K Series and KW Series, the KLA Series features a 1,000- watt power module, advanced DSP, simple yet powerful user configuration and a very high performance-to-value ratio. But, most importantly, they simply sound fantastic. And, in keeping true to the K Family paradigm, the KLA Series can very effectively be mixed and matched with its siblings in countless ways to suit a very broad range of both portable and installed-sound applications. The K Family is really representative of our direction today and into the future. Because we maintain amplifier, loudspeaker and DSP disciplines under one roof, with teams working together on a given project, the resulting finished product is QSC has vastly expanded from its grassroots beginnings, all the while maintaining its core founding values. more compelling than a patchwork of individual technologies. Many people think of integrated systems solely as a collection of products networked together, but integrated systems can also take the form factor of a single box. Given the response we've received on the K Family thus far, our customers seem to be quite accepting of our single-box solutions.

-The Retailer: Now, obviously, the integrated systems provider element is very important to you. It's something that's been emphasized. Can you explain why the mixer segment is particularly ripe for entry? Are there particular things about that segment that make you believe now is the time to take advantage of it?
Joe Pham: We've studied the segment and, yes, we believe there is an opportunity for us to apply QSC technologies to mixers in a way that will really excite the user. The teams that we've assembled to work on our mixer offerings are nothing short of world class, and we feel we're going to offer unique values that will set us apart from competitors.
Like the loudspeaker segment 10 years ago, the mixer segment is the next natural growth area for us in our transformation to an integrated systems provider. There are magical things that technology can bring to the audio signal after the microphone and before the human ear. That's what really excites us.

-The Retailer: Can you tell us a bit about what you're going to have going on as far as trade shows in the next six months or so? What do you have planned?
Joe Pham: We will be exhibiting at a number of shows. On the MI side of the business, we'll be exhibiting at Winter NAMM and MusikMesse/Prolight + Sound, as well as at a number of regional events, both domestic and international.

-The Retailer: What is your philosophy when it comes to working with dealers and the dealer channel? Would you say working closely with dealers is a big part of QSC's approach to business?
Joe Pham: Without our dealers, there would be no business. We recognize the significant role our channel partners play in representing QSC products, and we value those relationships immeasurably. We've been in business for more than 43 years, and we have quite a few dealers who have been with us for almost that long. We try our best every day to be the kind of vendor partner our dealers view as a long-term relationship. QSC will likely never be the lowest-cost, highest- margin or fastest-turn line in the dealers' portfolios. But we do feel very strongly that a formula comprised of great products of lasting value, comprehensive sales training and tools, compelling marketing, and unparalleled service and support provides a business relationship environment that fosters trust, growth and loyalty. To be successful, you have to recognize the need for change when it's indicated, or you'll be left in your competitors' dust. However, you also need to stand firm in your core values, the essence of your unique selling proposition, if you intend to define your brand. Our goal with our dealers is to be a valued, long-term partner and their favorite call of the day.

-The Retailer: Is there anything that the dealer channel could do that would be helpful to you, as a manufacturer? Do you have any suggestions to give the channel, which would help them sell QSC products even better?
Joe Pham: Understanding the QSC brand goes a long way in selling the brand. We hear time and time again from front-line salespeople that they love selling QSC because it's a one-way transaction. That is, it's very rare that a QSC product comes back due to failure or other defects that would negate a sale. That's their commission on the line and it's really painful to give back what they've earned. The customer who buys QSC understands the value of the product in terms of performance and reliability. Our six-year warranty really backs that up. QSC is a professional product for customers that derive income from its use. There's a lot of great product out there, and it's a big job for salespeople to keep up with every product in terms of features, operation and comparison to similar items. But, today, great product is table stakes. The salespeople who sell QSC as a professional tool that makes their customers money and allows them to sleep better
at night sleep better themselves, as well.

-The Retailer: Economic times during the past few years have been generally difficult. How well has QSC weathered the continuing economic storm? What proactive steps has the company taken to minimize its economy-related pain?
Joe Pham: Let me talk a little bit about 2008. Before the economic crash was evident, we saw many leading indicators that caused us great concern. We acted quickly to put together a multi-faceted plan. I personally met with every QSC employee in small group settings in order to answer all questions, be completely transparent and communicate the plan of how we were going to get through an economic meltdown. Because of our culture, we were able to have very open and honest conversations throughout the entire company. I don't want to get into the specifics of the plan, but it did center on continually serving our customers, not wavering from our strategic direction and it called upon the entire organization really to work together to power through the economy. Let's face it: People were terrified about losing their jobs. We put one goal ahead of any other, and that was to take care of the people and get through the recession without losing one job. And that's exactly what we did. I am so proud to say that, because of the team we have here, we have powered through the recession without losing one job. On the contrary, we've added many new people and have created many new positions over the last few years. Today, we are stronger than ever, currently operating at all-time highs in many metrics.

-The Retailer: Being able to say that you powered through it without losing a single job is, I think, something that very few organizations could say. So, certainly, that's something that's laudable.
Joe Pham: All of that is possible because of our core values and company culture. In times of crisis, people more than ever deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. The first responsibility of management is to communicate openly and honestly. Employees deserve to understand what's going on. They want to believe that management has their best interests in mind, and they want to know what they can do to help the company. I truly believe in the power of people. Never has it been more evident than in the last few years.

-The Retailer: Since QSC is involved in so many market segments, I'd like to get your "state of the union" for the industry, particularly with an accent on the MI space. Do you feel as though we're in growth mode, in contraction mode or just kind of idling? How would you judge the space overall?
Joe Pham: If you look at the broader economy, most will agree that it's going to be an extremely slow recovery at best. While there are key fundamental differences in the economy today versus 2008, what seems to be common is a high degree of uneasiness at the consumer level. Consumer sentiment and confidence are obviously critical factors in the MI space. I think we need to be realistic and understand that any recovery will be slow. With this economic outlook, manufacturers will need to figure out how to deliver even more value to the end consumer. Dealers will need to do the same. In the end, I do believe it will be a battle for the consumer dollar.

-The Retailer: What does the future hold for QSC? Do you foresee any major changes or shifts in terms of products, market segments, business relationships or company strategy? What can we expect to see?
Joe Pham: That's a really interesting question. QSC has always been about delivering high-performance, high-quality products, backed by comprehensive and responsive service that you can count on. That formula has worked extremely well for us the last 43 years. That is not going to change. Our core values won't change. Neither will our company culture, which entails working hard, working together and having fun. All of this is a part of our identity and a part of the foundation that Pat, Barry and John built. It is the foundation upon which we continue to build. At the same time, though, QSC has always been an organization of growth and change. And that is going to continue. So, will there be change? Yes, because there's always been change. Have I confused you? I think this is why there are so many songs with the lyric, "The more things change, the more they stay the same."

Westminster, CA - Korean First Presbyterian Church of Orange County, the mega church here with more than a thousand members and a rich 30-year history in the area, recently installed a QSC KLA Line Array Loudspeaker System as part of an upgrade intended to ensure that the audio equipment in the main sanctuary was more structurally sound -- and to ensure that the audio sounded better.

Aviwork, Inc. of Fullerton, CA handled the installation, and was tasked with designing a sound solution to meet the challenges of the sanctuary, which has a shallow and wide audience area and a number of balconies. With the former system, congregation members sitting in the corners, on the balconies and underneath them weren't able to hear the sermons. After visiting the church several times and analyzing the audio problems, Aviwork recommended KLA as the solution.

"I have been interested in the KLA System since its recent release. It's got an easy rigging system, a good price point and it sounds great," says Hosung Leem, Senior A/V Consultant at Aviwork. "Believe it or not, I didn't even hear the KLA System before recommending it to the church. I didn't have to -- I have had so many good experiences with QSC loudspeakers that I already knew the KLA Series would be great."

With the KLA's innovative SOLO(tm) (Single Operator Logistics) rigging system, which allows the line array to be deployed in a fraction of the time of comparable systems without the use of special tools or rigging hardware, the ease of installation was also everything that Leem expected.

"The church insisted on structurally sound equipment as a measure of earthquake protection, and the KLA's rigging system is both solid and easy to do, " adds Leem. "I get compliments all the time about the great sound from congregation members. "
The new KLA System has certainly pleased the pastors as well. "Previously, we had another manufacturer's loudspeakers in the main sanctuary, but these only covered certain areas, and missed areas like the corners of the room and the second floor, " says Young Suk Cho, Music Pastor at the Church. " With the new KLA System, all areas of the sanctuary are completely covered with adequate volume. Now you can hear everything in every remote part of the room."

About Aviwork
The newly formed Aviwork, Inc. is the result of a merger of two companies that have been providing integrated A/V solutions for many years, ITG Pro and UBI-TECH.
